Floor Wax

Floor wax is a product that is often used to give a specific finish to an area of floor. So, for example, if you are renovating a wooden floor you may apply a wax to give it a specific look once you have stripped it down, sanded it and got it ready to be finished.

There are many different types of floor wax you can use. Some can be used on hardwoods and softwoods. Others may not be suitable for all kinds of woods. Most waxes designed to cover large areas will come in a liquid form nowadays. These can be applied by machine although many people will simply apply them by hand.

So, for example, you could buy your floor wax and then apply it to your floor with a brush, paint roller, a specialist wax applicator or even a paint mop. Some waxes have different uses than others. Some, for example, can be applied before you finish our your area of floor and some can be used as the finishing product.

Many floor waxes are designed to simply give a clear and colourless waxy sheen to a floor. You can, however, use a wax that has a coloured element to it if you prefer. The colours here will usually come in the colours of wood. So, for example, you could use floor waxes with a mahogany, oak, beech or pine colour element to it.

Once you have applied a floor wax product you will probably be instructed to buff up the wax to get the best effects. You can use a floor buffing machine for this but you can also do it simply by hand by using a buffing cloth or even a standard type of cloth. The instructions on your wax product will give further instructions on what you need to do here.

It is important to follow the instructions you are given with your floor wax carefully. Some waxes may, for example, only need to be applied in one coat whilst others may need multiple coats to get the effect that you want. Wax drying times will vary here as well so that is also a factor worth checking out.

Any floor that you give a coating of floor wax to may need to be re-waxed over time. This is especially the case if the floor itself has heavy foot traffic. Applying coats of wax over time can, however, give your floor a patina and sheen that becomes particularly attractive as time passes.
